Blu Her Favorite Color LP

In a world dominated by emcee’s wanting the limelight for the wrong reasons, one might be forgiven for being shy to admitting a like for modern hip hop. There is certainly a lot of good stuff around but there is also a lot of rubbish in the modern mainstream industry, so when a piece of genius does come about you have the saviour the moments and Blu’s reissue of Her Favorite Colour is a piece of genius. Yes it is a reissue, but only of a mixtape that he released for free back in 2009. He lost his proverbial way when he signed for Warner Brothers’ Sire but since he signed for Brooklyn Nature Sounds Records Blu has found his way back to some classic tracks. The mixtape was re-mastered and formalised and is now out for general sale, though you’ll find it hard to come by in shops.

From Los Angeles, Johnson Barnes a.k.a Blu  has a unique sound frequently collaborating with producer Exile to create solid beats and a gentle flow.

Overall the album is a triumph of the highest order. Ignore the slightly louder samples from the film “Closer” and it is an album that allows you just to sit back and appreciate the subtle changes of tone, that makes it a truly unique and embracing album.
